The Audio Visual Technician has broad overall knowledge and experience in the use of computer, audio, video, and multimedia technologies in live production. The primary role of the AV Technician is to provide live event audio-visual support at on campus university events. A significant portion of events are in the evenings and on weekends so the ability to flex hours into evening and weekends is required in this role. Secondary roles include supporting in-studio media production and technical support for classroom audio visual systems. All activities of this position are to make a contribution to the fulfillment of the mission of the university.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties:

AV Event Support

  • Process requests for AV services submitted through established protocols
  • Communicate with service requesters to clarify needs and whether or not those needs can be met
  • Provide audio visual equipment set up and operation at events for the purpose of audio visual display, amplification, recording and/or live streaming.
  • Coordinate with third-party contractors to provide services when necessary.

AV Technology Infrastructure

  • Provide technical support for classrooms, labs and other spaces on all campuses.
  • Maintain instructional equipment for classrooms, labs, and other spaces on all campuses.
  • Troubleshoot instructional equipment for classrooms, labs, and other spaces on all campuses.
  • Diagnose, evaluate and perform needed repairs and maintenance to prevent and/or decrease potential failure.
  • Assist, as assigned, in providing training for faculty, staff and students in the operation of AV equipment.

Other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor, including but not limited to:

  • Cross-train and/or assist with audio visual media production
  • Assist in other day-to-day operations as directed by the supervisor


Bachelor Degree in Media or related field or higher is desired but not required; two years of audio visual technology experience within higher education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends to support live events.
  • An understanding of working within the confines of an institution of higher education (non-profit instead of a corporate atmosphere).
  • Experience with mixing multiple audio sources in live settings.
  • Experience with producing live presentations/performances involving various audio, video, and lighting needs.
  • Experience with an array of audio, video and lighting technologies and equipment for live settings.
  • Experience with live streaming multicam, multi-media setups on various platforms.
  • Working knowledge of software used in this role such as Google Workspace Apps, ProPresenter and PowerPoint, video and audio editing software.
  • Possesses the ability to troubleshoot and resolve audio visual system conflicts.
  • Possesses the ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies, and adapt to an evolving field.
  • Adept and enthusiastic about learning new technologies and new skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to offer high-level customer service and consultative skills to identify and implement required technology solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with both technical and nontechnical personnel at all levels in the organization.
