Under the supervision of the Director of Campus Safety, the Community Service Officer is responsible for conducting entry control at the gatehouses in accordance to the functions and procedures identified by the university and the Concordia East and West Homeowners Associations; providing general information and direction to visitors and guests while exercising excellent customer service skills; and responding to incoming telephone calls at Campus Safety Dispatch or at the gatehouses. Community Service Officers may also serve as a field-assistant to the on-duty Campus Safety Officers by assisting with routine calls, traffic control, or parking-related tasks.

Community Service Officers, whether serving on the field or in the gatehouses are obligated by the nature of their position to back up and assist the on-duty Campus Safety Officer(s) in the performance of their duties.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties satisfactorily:

Section A: Gatehouse Attendant Responsibilities

  1. Provide a welcoming, knowledgeable and authoritative presence as vehicles enter the Concordia University community and campus areas.
  2. Report any activity that may potentially impact the safety and security of the Concordia University community, campus personnel, and/or facilities to the on-duty Campus Safety Officer(s).
  3. Monitor all vehicular access to the Concordia University community and campus facilities while ensuring that incoming persons have legitimate business on campus or in the Concordia communities in accordance with procedures established by the university and the Concordia East and West Homeowner Associations.
  4. Maintain routine shift contact with on-duty Campus Safety Officer(s) and other university personnel as required.
  1. Keep informed of the dates, times and locations of special events and meetings on campus in order to provide visitors at the campus with helpful information.
  2. Answer incoming phone calls at the gatehouse or Dispatch assuring that all necessary requests for service, incidences, or other concerns are relayed to the on-duty Campus Safety Officer(s) or appropriate university personnel in a timely fashion.
  3. Provide general information about the university to individuals visiting the campus.
  4. Complete daily logs and other reports as required and maintain good records of logs and reports.
  5. Maintain both interior and exterior gate house appearance in a way that promotes a professional image to passersby, visitors and guests.
  6. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Section B: Field Assistant Responsibilities

  1. Assist on-duty Campus Safety Officer(s) with routine requests including but not limited to key assists, vehicle battery jumpstarts, safety escorts, and traffic control. Campus Safety personnel are not responsible for changing flat tires, obtaining gas for vehicles, or unlocking vehicle doors. Public assistance for vehicles is limited to those that are parked on campus.
  2. Report vehicles in violation of campus regulations and state laws. (Warnings may be given for other traffic violations of campus regulations.)
  3. Provide traffic control functions such as setting up signs and cones and directing traffic for special events.
  4. Report facility needs or unsafe conditions to Facility Services or appropriate university personnel.
  5. Assist Campus Safety Officer(s) in routine safety inspections of fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, alarms and emergency lighting systems when asked.
  6. Perform other duties as may be assigned.


  • Graduation from high school.
  • Ability to obtain a basic Guard Card through the California Bureau of Investigative Services.
