SUMMARY:

Office Profile: The Concordia University Library supports the instructional mission of the University by providing quality resources and services necessary for research, intellectual advancement, and lifelong learning. The library also strives to provide a quiet and studious atmosphere for study and learning.

 

ROLE:  Reporting to the Director of Library Services, the General Services Librarian performs a wide variety of general library work in technical and/or public services to assist patrons with daily operational needs of the Library such as circulation, instruction, copy cataloging, and maintaining library social media sites. Evening/weekend hours are required. All activities of this position are to make a contribution to the fulfillment of the mission of the university.

 

STAFF RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Report to the Director of Library Services and the Provost.
  • Interact and function cooperatively with other library personnel, faculty, staff and students.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Supervise the library Circulation Desk and student employees in absence of Public Services Librarian.
  2. Instruct and assist in the selection, interpretation, and use of library catalogs, databases, online resources, and print materials.
  3. Assist with cataloging of library materials, weeding, and collection development.
  4. Oversee the exchange of library materials with other institutions.
  5. Identify and maintain library technologies such as social networking, virtual reference, mobile learning tools, and other Web 2.0 applications to support the instructional and research activities for local and remote learners.
  6. Create and update online tutorials and guides for specific classes, assignments and subject areas.
  7. In collaboration with other librarians, maintain, update, and further develop the library website.
  8. Provide in-person, telephone, e-mail, and chat reference assistance.
  9. In collaboration with Instruction and Outreach Librarian, develop, revise, and conduct a wide variety of formal and informal educational and orientation programs for patrons, including tours, classes, and demonstrations.
  10. Contribute to the library newsletter.
  11. Assist with the processing, binding' and repair of materials.
  12. Work evenings and weekends.
  13. Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY REPONSIBILITIES: Supervise student employees in the absence of Public Services Librarian. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the university's policies and applicable laws.

 

APPOINTMENT:

  1. Recommended by the Director of Library Services in consultation with the Provost.
  2. Approved by the Executive Vice President / Provost.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Comfortable with delivering instruction and reference services.
  2. Experience with electronic resource management, integrated library systems, social networking technologies, online course delivery, and other emerging technologies.
  3. Knowledge of OCLC CatExpress and Worldshare is preferred.
  4. Adapt to people with various personality and/or cultural differences.
  5.  Willingness to work a flexible schedule as required.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree from an ALA accredited university and two years related experience and/or training.
